Stellenbosch will be hoping to do a Cape double over Kaizer Chiefs when they meet in the quarter-finals of the MTN8 at the Danie Craven Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Amakhosi were forced to endure their third defeat in the DStv Premiership on Tuesday evening after they suffered a 2-0 defeat to Cape Town City at the DHL Stadium. It was a lacklustre performance where they struggled to create many meaningful chances.
Stellies will be licking their wounds after a 3-0 thrashing at the hands of Mamelodi Sundowns.
“Lesson learnt go back to the drawing board – a big game for us on Sunday so we just have to regroup- get over this as quickly as possible and prepare for Sunday,” Stellies coach Steve Barker said.
Meanwhile, Chiefs coach Arthur Zwane said: “This is football and football is meant to help players to grow. Football is a game of mistakes. The only time you can protect any player, not only Siya [Ngezana] is by giving him an opportunity to play. His performance will obviously convince our supporters as time goes on.
“We do have other players who are doing well but you look at the way we want to play, you’ve got players that you want them to win their 1v1 battles, so some of the players that we have they’re very good but not in winning those 1v1 battles. Siya is one of those defenders that can win these 1v1 battles at the back.”
Although the two teams have never met in the MTN8 competition before, when they met in the league last season things ended all square with both teams taking three points each after Stellies secured a 1-0 win at the FNB Stadium in the first leg before Amakhosi claimed the win by the same margin in the return leg.
Júnior Mendieta has been one of Stellies’ standing out performers this campaign as he looks to continue his current form which has seen him contribute to four goals, including two goals and two assists in his last five matches.
Keagan Dolly will be looking to rediscover his form this campaign, having only scored one goal while failing to find the back of the net in his last three appearances for Chiefs.
