Lisandro Martinez

Manchester United have officially completed the signing of Argentina defender Lisandro Martinez from Ajax for a fee that could reach nearly £57 million.

The Red Devils have paid €57.37m (£48.3m) for the Argentina international, with an additional €10m (£8.4m) in add-ons agreed between the two clubs.

The 24-year-old has put pen to paper on a five-year contract with United, with the option of a further 12 months, which keeps him at the club until 2027.

Martinez’s move to Man Utd sees him reunite with former Ajax manager Erik ten Hag, who won two Eredivisie titles under new United boss during their time in Amsterdam.

Martinez arrived at United’s Carrington training base on Tuesday alongside fellow new signing Christian Eriksen, who completed a free transfer earlier this month after his contract with Brentford expired.

“It’s an honour to join this great football club,” Martinez told United’s website. “I’ve worked so hard to get to this moment and, now that I’m here, I’m going to push myself even further.

“I’ve been lucky enough to be part of successful teams in my career and that’s what I want to continue at Manchester United.

“There will be a lot of work to get to that moment, but I firmly believe that, under this manager and coaches, and together with my new teammates, we can do it.”

Meanwhile, United’s football director John Murtough said: “Lisandro is an outstanding player who will bring further quality and experience to Erik (Ten Hag)’s squad.”
