The start of the English football season is here! And the traditional match between the champions of England and the FA Cup holders once again start the campaign.
Here are three Liverpool and Manchester City players who could potentially lead their teams to glory in the highly-anticipated FA Community Shield at Wembley Stadium on Saturday evening.
Jurgen Klopp’s men booked their spot in the season’s curtain raiser after they defeated Chelsea 6-5 in a penalty shootout in the finals of the FA Cup at Wembley Stadium on 14 May 2022.
City boss Pep Guardiola saw his side earn their place in the Community Shield after they were crowned 2021-22 Premier League champions when they beat Liverpool to the title by just one point on the final day of the season.
The Premier League heavyweights will now square off in the opening fixture of the new season, which is scheduled to kick off at 6pm.
Despite his forgettable debut for Liverpool during pre-season, Nunez proved his goalscoring prowess after he bagged four goals in their 5-0 rout of RB Leipzig in only his second appearance for the Reds. Klopp will be hoping he can carry on his form against rivals Man City after he scored 34 goals in all competitions last season, including two against the Reds in the Champions League prior to his £85million move from Benfica.
The Colombian attacker has time and time again proven his worth at Liverpool and showed what a major threat he can be on the biggest occasions in the short space of time his been at the Reds. He has already netted six goals and registered five assists in 25 appearances last campaign and played a crucial role in helping the club win the Carabao Cup as well as the FA Cup trophy.
Carvalho has already shown his endeavour and confidence in the final third during pre-season with Liverpool and if he is given the chance to showcase his talent against Man City the Portuguese midfielder will add great value in attack, especially after he started forming a great partnership with Nunez in the final third.
The Norwegian striker will be relishing the chance to hit the ground running when the new season begins after scoring his first goal for Man City 12 minutes into his first appearance in their 1-0 win over Bayern Munich. Haaland has a huge appetite for goals and is an expert finisher, Haaland has begun to form a relationship in attack with Jack Grealish, who provided the assist for his goal on debut.
The 22-year-old comes very highly rated after racking up 53 goals and 31 assists in 120 appearances for River Plate but his most notable feat came against Allianz Lima when he smashed in six goals in their 8-1 victory in the Copa Libertadores. Man City will be hoping he can strike up a deadly partnership with fellow new signing Haaland at the Etihad as Guardiola will be banking on the Argentine continuing his incredible form after returning from loan.
The England international endured a frustrating first year at City as he struggled to adapt to the demands of Guardiola, however, Grealish continued to work on his game during pre-season and has already begun to show glimpses of his form self in their victory over Bayern (setting up the goal for Haaland). Grealish, however, could be the piece to the puzzle that could potentially help Haaland ease into the transition of playing in the Premier League.
