Brief Kaizer Chiefs history

Kaizer Chiefs was founded in January 1970 by Kaizer “ Chincha Guluva” Motaung, a former Orlando Pirates player who had just returned from the NASL side Atlanta Chiefs. Chiefs won their first top-flight league title, the NSL Cup, in 1974. In 2002, former South African President Nelson Mandela opened the club’s headquarters at Kaizer Chiefs Village, Naturena, Johannesburg. The club won their first Premiership title in 2004 and defended it in the next year. Kaizer Chiefs’ PSL campaigns eventually culminated in 12 league titles.

Chiefs play most home games at Soccer City in Nasrec, Soweto, commonly known as FNB Stadium. The stadium has a capacity of 94, 736. The club has used various other grounds in Johannesburg and began developing the Amakhosi stadium in 2006.
