The clubs have never met before, and UEFA confirms that neither has previously faced a team from the other’s country. Manchester United’s latest pre-match update has focused on player recovery rather than major late changes. Luke Shaw missed Wednesday’s open training as part of a planned recovery day, while Marcus Rashford returned to training after feeling discomfort during the 2-2 draw at Everton. Final availability should still be checked when the official matchday squad and starting XI are released.

United’s registered Champions League squad includes Bruno Fernandes, Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, Benjamin Šeško, Marcus Rashford, Kobbie Mainoo, Youri Tielemans, Andrey Santos, Lisandro Martínez, Harry Maguire and Senne Lammens among the senior options.

Sabah arrive with no major absence dominating the current pre-match coverage. Valdas Dambrauskas has a squad that includes Stas Pokatilov, Rahman Dashdamirov, Tymoteusz Puchacz, Umarali Rakhmonaliev, Kaheem Parris, Joy-Lance Mickels and Veljko Simić. Official lineups should replace any pre-match expectation only when they are confirmed.

Manchester United and Sabah FC have never met in a competitive match. UEFA also notes that United have never previously faced a club from Azerbaijan, while Sabah have never faced an English team.

United have four points from their opening three Premier League matches after one win, one draw and one defeat. Sabah, meanwhile, have carried strong domestic form into their European debut and also came through four Champions League qualifying rounds to reach the league phase.

Manchester United’s attacking play is likely to revolve around Bruno Fernandes as the main creative reference, with Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Šeško among the options around him. United’s midfield choices also include Kobbie Mainoo, Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos, giving Michael Carrick several ways to control possession and move the ball into the final third.

Sabah’s clearest attacking reference from Champions League qualifying is Veljko Simić. UEFA lists him as the club’s key player after he scored six goals in eight qualifying appearances, while Joy-Lance Mickels also contributed four goals during the campaign.

The main tactical contrast is between United’s ability to control territory at Old Trafford and Sabah’s experience of surviving high-pressure qualifying ties. That is a useful match angle without turning the preview into a prediction.

Michael Carrick has described Manchester United’s return to the Champions League as a major moment and made clear that the club’s aim is to progress deep into the competition rather than simply enjoy being back. He also acknowledged the demanding schedule, with the Manchester derby following only three days later.

For Sabah, Valdas Dambrauskas leads the club into a landmark first Champions League league-phase match after guiding them through qualifying. UEFA describes Sabah as the youngest club ever to reach this stage of the competition, adding extra significance to their visit to Old Trafford.
