This past Saturday, the rolling hills of northern KwaZulu-Natal came alive with the sounds of traditional music, and the vibrant hum of celebration as the Dundee July returned in full force. Proudly rooted in culture and rural identity, the event is one of the most anticipated on the traditional horse racing calendar – and this year was no different.
As SportPesa, we were honoured to be there through our community development initiative Ithotho – not just as supporters of the race, but as partners committed to preserving, evolving, and empowering this proudly South African tradition.
Culture in Motion
From the moment the gates opened, it was clear the day would be special. Families arrived dressed to impress, fashionistas walked the grass like a runway, and the unmistakable beat of Maskandi filled the air. Riders from across the province prepared their horses with care and pride, many of them representing communities where horse racing is a way of life – and a symbol of resilience.
The Dundee July isn’t just about racing. It’s about music, fashion, storytelling, and connection. It’s where heritage is not only remembered but performed – with pride, passion, and pageantry. We witnessed firsthand how this event continues to hold space for tradition in a rapidly changing world.
The Power of Presence
Beyond the festivities, the weekend was also a chance to connect with stakeholders who play a vital role in the future of the sport. Our team spent time in conversation with members of the Gambling Board, the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, local organisers, and racing leadership – strengthening the relationships that make this work possible.
These weren’t just formal meetings. They were moments of reflection, alignment, and shared vision – reminding us that ensuring the longevity of traditional horse racing requires more than admiration. It demands action, infrastructure, and long-term investment.

Backing the Dundee July — and Beyond
Through Ithotho, SportPesa has spent the past few years growing our involvement in traditional horse racing – from supporting flagship events like the Dundee July and the Harry Gwala Summer Cup, to investing in horse welfare and youth employment through several strategic initiatives.
We’re proud to contribute not just financially, but operationally too. As members of the Dundee July Local Organising Committee, we help with everything from planning logistics to prize distribution and compliance – because we know that a well-run event builds trust, participation, and credibility within the community.

Building a Sustainable Ecosystem
Our efforts don’t end at the finish line. Behind every rider and horse is a chain of people, care, and resources – and Ithotho exists to support that full ecosystem. From the distribution of over 240 horse blankets (with another 126 on the way), to subsidised breeding, stabling, and veterinary care for rural horse owners – we’re working to remove the barriers that stand in the way of excellence.
Through partnerships with organisations like Play2Legal and the Coastal Horse Care Unit, we’re also investing in skills development for rural youth, enabling them to find work and purpose within the industry as farriers, caregivers, and transport specialists.

Why It All Matters
At its core, this work is about dignity. It’s about preserving a tradition while ensuring it can grow with the times. It’s about seeing value in every groom, every mare, every trainer, and every young person with dreams of making their mark in the sport – and giving them the tools and support to do so.
The Dundee July reflects that promise. A space where community, culture, and sport intersect. A space where we can all gather – dressed to the nines, singing, dancing, cheering – and be reminded that legacy is something we create together.
