It’s that time of the week again… your recap of all things SportPesa.

Welcome to Episode 9 of the SportPesa Magazine Show, where this week’s spotlight falls firmly on the biggest stage in university rugby. After nine weeks of fierce competition, dramatic finishes and standout performances, the 2026 FNB Varsity Cup and Varsity Shield seasons have delivered their champions.

From title celebrations to one final still to come, here’s everything you need to know.

Wits Crowned 2026 FNB Varsity Shield Champions

It was a memorable final in Johannesburg as Wits produced a dominant display against All Blacks WSU to lift the 2026 FNB Varsity Shield trophy.

The victory secures Wits promotion back to the Varsity Cup for the 2027 season, marking a major achievement for the side after a strong campaign.

For WSU, the journey is not over yet. They will still have an opportunity to earn promotion through the promotion/relegation playoff later this year against FNB Madibaz.

Credit must also go to every Varsity Shield team this season for delivering passion, intensity and quality rugby throughout the competition.

UP-TUKS Make History in Varsity Cup Final

Over in Pretoria, UP-TUKS wrote another chapter in Varsity Cup history with a commanding 31-3 victory over NWU Eagles in the 2026 FNB Varsity Cup Final.

The result means UP-TUKS become the first team to win the tournament six times since the competition began in 2008.

A clinical performance on the biggest night of the season, and another trophy heading back to Pretoria.

Plus we got to interview former Springbok and World Cup winning captain Francois Pienaar!

One Final Still to Come

There is still one more title to be decided.

The FNB Varsity Cup Women’s Final sees UWC Women host UFH Women in what promises to be another quality showdown to close out the tournament.

One more match. One more champion to crown.

Kenya Sevens Eye Hong Kong

From the wider SportPesa family, Kenya Sevens coach Kevin Wambua shared insight into the team’s upcoming trip to the Hong Kong Sevens.

With one of the most iconic tournaments on the global sevens calendar approaching, all eyes will be on Kenya as they prepare for another big international challenge.
