Leicester City are out to avoid relegation when they host Liverpool

The Foxes won the Premier League in 2016 to write one of the game’s biggest ever stories.

But things are now very different … they are fighting for top-flight survival this time around with the team third from bottom and two points from safety.

“I think at this moment in time it (survival) would be the biggest achievement. That’s how important it is,” Vardy told TalkSPORT radio.

“It’s hard and I don’t think hurting is actually a strong enough word for personally how I’m feeling as a person, being here that long.

“Being on all the ups and downs throughout all of the time that I’ve been here, I’ve never wanted to see us be in a situation like that again, so to be where we are, it’s hard to take.”

Leicester, who won the 2020-21 FA Cup, host Liverpool on Monday before facing Newcastle United away and West Ham United at home.

England midfielder James Maddison said after this week’s 5-3 defeat to Fulham that Leicester, level with Leeds on 30 points, were still battling, even though games against Liverpool, Newcastle and West Ham look tough.

“It’s not down to attitude or application,” he tweeted. “We will keep going until the very end.”

Liverpool have won five in a row and will be expected to win.

They must win if they are to keep the pressure on Manchester United, who are only a point ahead with a few games to go.

United’s form is terrible and so the Reds’ manager knows his side could sneak into Europe’s elite competition still.

Speaking about potential pressure on the teams above them, he said: “(Third-placed) Newcastle and Manchester United would be happier probably if we were not there… but still it’s more likely that they will do it. If they finish the season above us, they deserve it.”

The German manager said his side’s winning run had set the tone for next season after an inconsistent campaign.
