The victory was slightly diminished when they lost 2-0 to Inter on the weekend. They are now out of the top six in the Serie A and without a win in four league matches.

Surprisingly Roma boss Jose Mourinho has been linked with a move to take over big-spending PSG in the summer. A good showing in the Europa League will go to enhance his waning CV.

Bayer Leverkusen eased into the Europa League semi-finals after crushing hosts Union Saint-Gilloise of Belgium 4-1 on Thursday for a 5-2 aggregate win that stretched their unbeaten run to 12 straight matches across all competitions. That run was ended in shock at 14 games following a  2-1 defeat to Cologne.

Xabi Alonso’s team – who sit sixth in the Bundesliga – proved extremely efficient, needing just 66 seconds for Moussa Diaby to round keeper Anthony Moris and finish a quick move by the Germans to open the scoring.

Diaby has been tipped as the key player to watch in this outing.

It’s the kind of performance from Alonso’s team that has the former Liverpool and Real Madrid player in the hunt for a top job in the Premier League. But first, he will want to go all the way with Leverkusen.
