Betting preview: Spurs vs Southampton

Tottenham Hotspur face Southampton in their Premier League opener on Saturday.

Antonio Conte will begin his first full season at Spurs when they welcome Southampton to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The Lilywhites fended off competition from London rivals Arsenal to clinch a Champions League spot last year after finishing in fourth place on the final day with a 5-0 trashing of relegated Norwich City.

Conte’s side oversaw victories over Team K-League and Rangers during pre-season before playing out to a draw against Spanish side Sevilla followed by a narrow 1-0 defeat to Serie A outfit AS Roma in the I-Tech Cup to end their pre-season campaign.

Meanwhile, Southampton had a disappointing campaign last season after they finished the season in 15th place on the table after suffering a humiliating 4-1 defeat to Leicester City at the King Power Stadium on the final day of the season.

The Saints played five club friendlies during pre-season but only managed to secure one victory during pre-season against AS Monaco, suffering defeats to RB Leipzig and Villarreal, while played out to goalless draws against Austria Klagenfurt and Watford, respectively.

Antonio Conte says: “I’m happy because we’ve finished the pre-season and we want to start the season and have important games to get three points.

“For sure we want to continue to improve, to build something important for this club. If the idea continues to be in this way, there will be zero problems to continue my life in Tottenham because I stay well and I like this group of players and I have a good relationship with Paratici and with Daniel Levy.

“I repeat that I’m not a coach who needs to sign a contract for money. I don’t need that. In this moment I don’t need this.

“I need to have enthusiasm and the passion for this role.” With contract negotiations set to take place this campaign, it seems as though healthy dynamics between Conte, Levy, Paratici and the players will be used to the Lilywhites’ advantage.

When the two teams met in the Premier League last season, Spurs were forced to share the spoils with the Saints after playing out to a goalless draw in the first leg at St. Mary’s Stadium but it was Southampton who had the last say as they went on to edge out Spurs 3-2 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the return leg to snatch four points from two matches against Conte’s side.

Conte will be without marquee signing Richarlison for their opening league match as he serves a match suspension while Oliver Skipp is doubtful for the encounter due to a leg injury.

Ralph Hasenhüttl is expected to be without the likes of Tino Livramento and Theo Walcott through their respective injuries, while it is yet to be determined whether or not Nathan Tella will be fit in time for the encounter after sustaining a knee injury.

Son Heung-min has a great scoring record against the Saints, scoring 12 goals against them, including five in his last six appearances against Southampton across all competitions.
