Betting preview: Everton vs Chelsea

Frank Lampard will face his former team Chelsea for the first time when Everton welcomes the Blues to Goodison Park in their opening Premier League fixture for the 2022-23 season.

The Toffees had a below-par campaign last season after they finished the season in 16th place on the table following their humiliating 5-1 hammering against Arsenal on the final day of last season.

Everton got their pre-season off to a slow start after suffering back-to-back defeats to Arsenal and Minnesota United but the Toffees managed to bounce back in their final two club friendlies by securing back-to-back victories over Blackpool and Dinamo Kiev, respectively.

The Blues secured their Champions League spot for this campaign after they finished last season in third place on the standings following their 2-1 victory over relegated Watford on the final day.

Chelsea started their pre-season off with a 2-1 victory over Club America but failed to continue their winning mentality after suffering back-to-back defeats to Charlotte and Arsenal but they managed to return to winning ways in their final pre-season friendly after they defeated Udinese 3-1 at the Dacia Arena.

Everton forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin is unlikely to be fit.

Frank Lampard says: “We are assessing Dom’s injury. No timeframe has been confirmed and we are pretty sure what level it is so we are hopeful it is not long-term.

“We’ll miss him for Chelsea. He was looking in great physical condition and was training really well. It was a freak injury in training, which does happen.

“It’s a shame but we have to find the solutions to keep ourselves strong without Dominic before he returns.”

Everton got the better of Chelsea last campaign after they held the blues to a 1-1 draw when Jarrad Branthwaite cancelled out Mason Mount’s opener at Stamford Bridge in the first leg before edging out Chelsea 1-0 thanks to a Richarlison goal which proved to be the decisive goal at Goodison Park in the return leg.

Lampard will be without four key players for the clash as Calvert-Lewin, Séamus Coleman and Andros Townsend will be sidelined through injury, while Salomón Rondón will miss the game through suspension.

Thomas Tuchel is only expected to have one player on the sidelines as Timo Werner picked up a muscle injury during their pre-season tour.

Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford has always had a knack for keeping a clean sheet against Chelsea as he has more career clean sheets against the Blues with five, more than any other side he has faced.

New Chelsea signing Raheem Sterling has only ever scored two goals at Goodison Park but the England international has the opportunity to become the first player to score two hat-tricks on the opening day of the EPL campaign after his hat-trick on matchday one back during the 2019/20 season.
