The 16th running of the Dundee July – powered by SportPesa and Ithotho – took place fittingly on the 16th of July 2022! And was once again a key fixture on the rural horse racing calendar.
After the event bounced back from the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021, this year’s was a true spectacle of community, fashion, street carnival, Zulu dancing and celebrations that rocked Dundee in style.
The most popular and biggest event of any kind in the northwestern corner of the KwaZulu-Natal province a masterstroke by the local provincial government and big name sponsors in SportPesa and Ithotho has turned this into a truly spectacular event.
With the winner of the main race taking home R100,000 and all 200 horses taking part receiving an appearance fee, the economic spin-off and prosperity is enjoyed as huge social upliftment in the area. And with the races having universal appeal across all genders and age groups, it was a true community event enjoyed by one and all.
With spectators returning to the event after being prevented by regulations last year and a theme of “Royalty” giving it added glamour and impetus, it was a day of pomp and ceremony enjoyed by so many adoring fans.
MEC for Sports, Arts and Culture Ms. Hlengiwe Mavimbela, MPL welcomed all by saying, “The Dundee July comes across as one of the events we pride ourselves of as the Provincial government as it plays a role in boosting sports tourism in KwaZulu-Natal.”
His Worship, Mayor of Umzinyathi councillor PMS Ngubane spoke of the historic significance of the region and the event and said, “it brings us joy to see local sponsors from our district play a role in such an important event.”
SportPesa has always associated itself with the development of sport, from grassroots to elite level. Through its sister brand, Ithotho, and the latter’s own involvement in Standardbred Rural Horseracing, the organisation hopes to continue contributing to the Dundee event and to the industry in years to come.
The Dundee July winner was Nxakanxaka who fought of Troublemaker to win the title!
