Cape Town City bolster defence

Cape Town City have bolstered their squad by confirming the signing of veteran defender Marc van Heerden.

The 34-year-old most recently plied his trade at Stellenbosch. He earned 78 caps during his three years in the winelands before agreeing to part ways.

“I’m very excited to have gotten the call from [head coach] Eric (Tinkler) and [chairman] John (Comitis) to join the club,” Van Heerden said.

“City is a big club and they want to be challenging for everything which is really exciting. The first two weeks so far have been really good, really intense, and you can see the intentions from the club, the players and the coaching staff.

“They are serious about what they want to achieve and I am happy to be a part of that. Let’s go and do whatever we can to win whatever we can. I’m looking forward to a really strong season and bring (home) silverware.”

Van Heerden began his career in 2005 with Amatuks and played for Amazulu, Chippa United and Orlando Pirates before joining Stellenbosch three years ago.

He has six caps for Bafana Bafana.
