Orlando Pirates will be looking to close the gap on Mamelodi Sundowns when they take on SuperSport United at the Orlando Stadium in the DStv Premiership on Wednesday evening.

Orlando Pirates come into the game looking to return to winning ways after they suffered a 5-4 defeat on penalties in the Nedbank Cup last 16 to holders Marumo Gallants on Tuesday evening.


The Buccaneers have not secured a win in their last three matches in the DStv Premiership after they played out to goalless draws against Golden Arrows and Cape Town City before suffering a defeat to arch-rivals Kaizer Chiefs in their last league encounter.

The Sea Robbers currently sits in fourth place in the league table with 32 points, having won seven drew 11 and conceded just four defeats in 22 matches played so far this season.


SuperSport United will be hoping to secure back-to-back victories in succession after they managed to claim a 2-0 victory over AmaZulu in their previous match at the Lucas Moripe Stadium through goals from Jesse Donn and Iqraam Rayners.

Matsatsantsa have had mixed results in their last three league games and have suffered a 2-1 defeat to Maritzburg United before conceding a 2-0 loss to Royal AM before returning to winning ways with a 2-0 win over AmaZulu.

United come into the tie sitting in seventh place – level on 29 points with eighth-placed after winning eight games playing to five draws and losing seven from 20 matches played in the league thus far.

In the last three meetings between the teams, Pirates have gotten the upper hand over United claiming two 2-1 victories at the Orlando Stadium, while the previous game between them ended in a 1-1 draw at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in the DStv Premiership.

Bandile Shandu continues to be the leading light for Pirates in recent games and has further fired his way to the top of the Buccaneers scoring charts after netting his seventh goal of the campaign in their 1-1 draw with Marumo Gallants on Tuesday.

Thamsanqa Gabuza remains SuperSport leading goal scorer this campaign with six goals to his name and although he hasn’t found the back of the net in the last few matches, Gabuza will be relishing the chance to find his scoring form against his former club.

Heading into this fixture, Kaitano Tembo and Mandla Ncikazi is expected to have a fully fit squad with no injuries or suspensions.
