Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur will engage in a key battle on Sunday as they escalate their endeavours to solidify a top-four position on the Premier League table.

As it stands, the Gunners hold down fourth position, but West Ham are just a single point behind, while Spurs are two points adrift of the Gunners in sixth place.

That context will add to the tension ahead of the Sunday night encounter at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, which is sure to be one of the headline fixtures this weekend.

It comes at a time when Arsenal crashed out of the FA Cup after a shock loss to second-tier club Nottingham Forest on Sunday – just the second time in 26 seasons that Arsenal have fallen in the third round.

Some redemption in the Premier League now remains a key objective for Mikel Arteta’s charges, with the manager having said the team is “really hurting” after the FA Cup exit.

“It’s a competition that is very related to our history and to get out of it today is a big bump. Really disappointed with the performance first of all. Not with the attitude, but how much purpose we had and what determination we showed to change the game when it’s difficult to play against (them).

“(We needed) more drive, more hunger to win at any cost in every single action, much more.”

Arsenal will next face Liverpool in a League Cup semi-final first leg tie on Thursday before taking on Tottenham, and so it will require careful squad management once again.

Arteta has reiterated that there can be no more excuses, and a victory over Spurs would be the ideal way to revive their season after blowing a golden opportunity to beat Man City at the start of the year.

In what will come as some relief for Arsenal fans, though, Spurs superstar Son Heung-min will not be available for Sunday’s game after the forward was ruled out with an injury that is set to sideline him into next month.

Notably, Spurs have not lost a game in the Premier League since the end of October, and they will now be hunting a victory that could see them leapfrog Arsenal on the log as their resurgence continues.
