Michael Carrick will lead Manchester United on Tuesday when they face Villarreal in the Champions League following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s dismissal on Sunday.
The first team coach was temporarily handed the first-team reins at Old Trafford on Sunday after Solskjaer was finally relieved of his duties following United’s humiliating 4-1 defeat to Watford over the weekend.
The Yellow Submarines, meanwhile, will bring a three-game unbeaten run across all competition into Tuesday’s clash, having beaten Young Boys 2-0 in the Champions League before overcoming Getafe and drawing 1-1 with Celta Vigo in La Liga either side of the international break.
Unai Emery’s side will be looking to use the pressure on United to inspire a win that will see them qualify for the knockout round if Young Boys overcome Atalanta in the other contest in Group F.
Carrick’s side will go into the clash knowing that a win against the Spanish outfit will confirm their spot in the knockout round of the competition with a game to spare, but a defeat would leave them vulnerable in Group F depending on the other result in the group.
When the two sides last faced off in the first leg of the group stages, United edged Villarreal 2-1 at Old Trafford when two second half goals from Alex Telles and Cristiano Ronaldo cancelled out Paco Alcácer’s 53rd minute opener.
