Teko Modise shares his views on the start of the season as the country’s biggest sides look to secure a fast start in the Premiership.
Mamelodi Sundowns vs Amazulu – 5pm on Friday
The league champions face Usuthu in a worthy opener to start the new domestic campaign. Last season this clash saw seven goals with Sundowns winning a thriller.
What lies ahead?
Teko says: “I think Amazulu has a strong squad and will certainly test the defending champions. I’m leaning towards a narrow victory for Masandawana … they are at home and will be comfortable there as well as looking to start well like they did last week but this time finish it off in style. “
Cape Town City vs SuperSport United – 5pm on Saturday
Two sides looking to stamp their mark as potential title challengers face off in Cape Town on Saturday at 5pm.
Will either side snatch victory and start their season off in perfect fashion?
What Teko says: “I was impressed by City last weekend. They hit the ground running and looked fit and fast. They beat a strong Amazulu side and will be ready to go again. SuperSport were unconvincing in the cup and got knocked out. This one could be headed for a draw … it’s a game that could see any three of the results but maybe both sides don’t want to lose early on.”
Orlando Pirates vs Stellenbosch United
The Bucs host the Winelands club but without a head coach in charge.
Teko says: “I think Pirates could find themselves playing with a little more freedom. A new voice in the changing room could see them start refreshed and rejuvenated. A win could be the turning point for them.”
TS Galaxy vs Kaizer Chiefs – Sunday at 5pm
Stuart Baxter was pleased with his side’s performance in the MTN8. While they lost out on penalties, rather controversially too, it was a good display against the defending champions. Now they face the team they beat at the end of last season to make the cup in the first place.
What Teko says: “The way they played in the second half against Sundowns, that will give so many people hope of a new team playing much better this season. The hosts have been quiet in the off-season and with Chiefs having a good run out in the cup, that should tilt this one in the favour of the Glamour Boys.”
