Bafana Bafana scored two goals in the last five minutes to ensure all three points against Sao Tome and Principe in their AFCON 2021 qualifier on Monday.
Played on home soil due to coronavirus precautions, Sao Tome took the lead with South Africa caught napping at the set piece. The win put Bafana within a point of qualification for the showpiece event even if they struggled in their outings against the The Falcons and True Parrots Team, who appeared unaffected by being forced to play two matches away from home.
Jocy Soares’ opener saw Percy Tau and Co. forced to pick up their attacking momentum and they did that as Themba Zwane slotted home after a clever ball from Dean Furman.
The deadlock remained until Tau fired into the top corner but once again the hosts on the day pulled themselves back into the contest as Harramiz Soares headed past Ronwen Williams.
A nervous final few minutes brought out the best as Zwane and Tau completed the brace to give their side a comfortable win – at least on the scoreboard anyway.
Sudan will lock horns with Group C leaders, Ghana, at the Al Hilal Stadium in Omdurman on Tuesday. The match kicks off at 3pm.
