A weekend full of PSL action brings a sense of normality back to South African soccer-loving fans with the title race and relegation battle heating up.
Saturday 15 August 2020
AmaZulu v Baroka
A disastrous 3-0 Nedbank Cup semi-final loss to Bloem Celtic puts Baroka on the back foot in a clash between two teams level on 23 points, just three off the bottom of the log. Baroka coach Dylan Kerr will need captain Elvis Chipezeze and attacking threat Gerard Phiri Jr to inspire the side to a much-improved performance.
Things aren’t exactly rosy for Usuthu, who have Ayanda Dlamini serving as caretaker coach with Josef Vukuzic still suspended. Victory for either side will go along way to setting up a cushion with PSL status of utmost importance.
Suggested bet: Both teams to score at 2.10
Stellenbosch v Golden Arrows
Two wins before lockdown helped Stellenbosch’s survival cause greatly. The reset, however, may not have such positive implications as players battle to find the same rhythm. If you look to the English Premier League for an example, the teams weaker on paper often struggled in their first few games back. Arrows, seasoned campaigners in this division, will be looking to cement their top eight hopes and head coach Steve Komphela is likely to have a game plan that will ensure a positive restart.
Suggested bet: Draw no bet Golden Arrows at 2.00
Polokwane City v Kaizer Chiefs
A draw against Wits was no train smash for Ernst Middendorp’s side but anything less than a win in this one will be. Polokwane are in a fight to save their status and cannot match Chiefs across the park. Barring calamity the visitors should breeze through this encounter with a clean sheet.
Suggested bet: Chiefs to win and under 2.5 match goals at 2.80
Orlando Pirates v Bidvest Wits
Pirates ended their draw against Sundowns in rampant spirit and will be keen to start this clash in the same manner. Off-field problems aside – strikers Justin Shonga and Thembinkosi Lorch face disciplinary procedures after breaching the team’s Covid-19 protocols and will miss this one – the Soweto side remain a threat.
The Wits squad are still coping with the board’s decision to sell the outfit during the lockdown but have not been push overs thus far. In football, a little uncertainty often goes a long way …
Suggested bet: Draw at half-time and Pirates to win at 5.25
