The countdown is almost officially over.
The 2026 FNB Varsity Cup and FNB Varsity Shield season is here – and it all kicked off in style at the national launch hosted at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town.
With captains, mascots, fans and partners coming together under one roof, the launch set the tone for what promises to be another unforgettable year of student rugby. From high-energy stage moments and crowd interaction to behind-the-scenes interviews and plenty of campus pride, the day was a true celebration of the game and the culture around it.
As SportPesa South Africa, we were proud to be part of a launch that put the spotlight firmly on the next generation of rugby talent – and the fans who show up week after week to support them.
What the Launch Was All About
The national launch brought together representatives from all three competitions — Varsity Cup, Varsity Shield and the Women’s Varsity Cup — with captains and mascots taking centre stage as the big question for the season was asked: Who’s next?
Fans were treated to live interviews, on-stage moments, sponsor activations and plenty of photo opportunities, all while getting a first look at what the 2026 season has in store. The atmosphere was energetic, colourful and unmistakably Varsity Cup — fast, fun and full of personality.
Varsity Cup Kicks Off This Friday
The action now moves from the stage to the field, with the FNB Varsity Cup and FNB Varsity Shield kicking off this Friday.
- Varsity Shield gets underway first, followed closely by the opening Varsity Cup fixtures
- Matches will take place across campuses around the country, bringing the excitement straight to students and local supporters
- Fans can catch games live at stadiums or follow the action via broadcast and digital platforms
