This September, our SportPesa team joined thousands of fans at the Varsity Football Women’s Tournament – and what an experience it’s been! From electrifying matchdays at UJ Soweto Stadium to celebrating the stars of the future, this tournament has been a powerful reminder of why women’s football in South Africa is unstoppable.

The Tournament So Far
The competition kicked off with 8 of the country’s top universities: UJ, UWC, TUT, Wits, Univen, NWU Mafikeng, CPUT and UP-Tuks. The football has been fearless, creative and filled with goals.
Now we’re down to the semi-finalists:
- UJ – unbeaten in Group B and carrying massive home support.
- UWC – defending champions, who made headlines with a massive 10–0 win over Univen.
- Wits – proving they’re more than underdogs.
- TUT – bringing grit and determination to every match.
Goal Rush Highlights
As proud partners, we’ve been running the SportPesa Goal Rush Award – celebrating the standout goals and moments from each round. A few of the stars who’ve stolen the show so far include:
- Thato Mofolo – elegance in midfield and an eye for the spectacular.
- Keletso Sekhwela – her strike had the Mafikeng crowd buzzing.
- Gugu Dhlamini (UJ) – set the tone with an opening goal that got the Goal Rush nod.
These Goal Rush prizes aren’t just about the scoreboard – they’re about rewarding flair, passion and the kind of football that makes you jump out of your seat.
More Than Just Football
Everywhere we went, the energy was unmatched. Students came straight from class, filled the stands, and made the stadium bounce with chants and celebrations. It’s more than a tournament – it’s a movement. And as SportPesa, being part of this journey means helping to grow women’s football culture in Mzansi.
The Road to the Final 👑
With the final set for 19 September, the big question is: will UWC defend their crown, or will UJ’s unbeaten run carry them to glory? Wits and TUT are ready to spoil the party, and we know there’s still room for more Goal Rush magic.
For us, this partnership isn’t just about sponsoring a tournament. It’s about celebrating women in sport, backing the next generation of talent, and making sure women’s football gets the platform it deserves.
