Gavin Hunt saw his team beat Kaizer Chiefs and will now bid to sneak past Orlando Pirates on Saturday.
The race to finish second in the PSL once included Chiefs but their form has badly dwindled. For a few weeks, Pirates and SuperSport United have been in a thrilling race.
And Sekhukhune have played their part – they drew 1-1 against Pirates to leave the final match day with all to play for.
Pirates are second with 51 points, level with the third-placed SuperSport United.
Pirates visit AmaZulu and Hunt’s men will play Sekhukhune United.
Both matches finish at 3pm.
SuperSport United became only the eighth club in Premier Soccer League history to finish the season unbeaten at home, something not even record-breaking champions Mamelodi Sundowns could achieve this term.
SuperSport, who were forced to move from their home at Atteridgeville last month after the PSL found the stadium below standards, completed their 15-match home programme on Saturday with a 1-0 win over Kaizer Chiefs at the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace.
Hunt is in his second spell at SuperSport and has done wonders without a transfer budget to speak of.
“Anything can happen. I can’t really say what I want to say, for me personally, it would be a huge disappointment not to get CAF Champions League football,” Hunt said.
Second place gets into the Champions League and third joins Sekhukhune in the Confederation Cup. A mighty battle across two pitches awaits…
Speaking ahead of the tie, Truter mentioned that SuperSport will come as a stern test, given their formations and playing styles.
“A very important game for us this weekend, very difficult game as well,” Truter told the club’s media department.
“It’s a team that wants to get to [CAF] Champions League football, that makes it a cup final for them.
“It’s a good test for us, we also fighting for the top eight. So it will be an interesting and difficult game in terms of qualities, formations, playing styles and considering the first round result.
“The guys are ready, we have one or two injury concerns that might not be ready for this week.
“But we’ll put up a very capable team to in an effort to secure three points at home, that will be our aim this weekend.”
