Rampant Mamelodi Sundowns can go even closer to another successful title defence with a win over Stellenbosch.
Sundowns will win their sixth successive season but all eyes are on when. It won’t be this weekend but it will be soon.
The Brazilians romped past Marumo Gallants on Thursday night as Peter Shalulile bagged himself a hat-trick. It was a rematch of 2022 Nedbank Cup final but Gallants are now out. Sundowns are on a roll.
They have won 15 in a row in the league and return to PSL action against Stellenbosch looking for three points to make it 58.
SuperSport United can only reach a maximum of 63 points if they win all nine of their remaining fixtures. They face Golden Arrows – who won their reserve fixture – and if they lose, then Sundowns just need one more win to claim the silverware and go back to concentrating on CAF Champions League glory.
Rulani Mokwena has trouble on his hands – both Andile Jali and Sipho Mbule have been suspended over allegedly arriving drunk to training. Jali is trying to force his exit with Kaizer Chiefs waiting in the wings.
So Mokwena has done well to tell his squad they must focus on their immediate task at hand and not worry about celebrating.
We’ve got so much work to do and so many games to play. There are still nine games to play [in the DStv Premiership] this season.
“We must respect every opponent. It’s going to be difficult. But the same way we respected the 21 games, we have to respect the nine with due diligence,” he said.
Stellenbosch will be hoping that the off-field antics are worse than reporting as they look to spring a shock and add more glitz to their growing CVs at the highest level.
The Winelands team have won three in a row to move to ninth and are now just five points off third place.
They are the next best team when it comes to form, so Mokwena best put out his most powerful starting lineup.
