The London club managed to hang on for 3-2 home win over 10-man Eintracht Frankfurt.
Heung-Min Son scored a double to go with a Harry Kane penalty but they let their 3-1 advantage slip when Faride Alidou scored a late goal.
Kane also missed an injury-time penalty on a dramatic evening.
The win leaves them on seven points, three more than Frankfurt. Sporting Lisbon and Marseille have six in a tense battle for places in the next round.
