Barcelona face more financial troubles as they look set to crash out of the Champions League.
After going down 2-1 in the 63rd minute thanks to Lautaro Martinez, Barcelona fought hard to find a goal to level up the match. Robert Lewandowski found that goal in the 82nd minute to make it 2-2.
But once again, Inter went in front thanks to Robin Gosens.
Lewandowski managed to find another equaliser as he headed home in stoppage time.
The scenario is simple going into the next match. If Milan beat winless Viktoria Plzen in their next match, Barcelona will be sent down to the Europa League for the second season in a row.
That will have a huge impact on their finances as they budgeted on making the quarter-finals this season. They now stand to lose nearly 20 million pounds in revenue.
The cash-strapped club face another financial crisis and El Classico looms on Sunday.
Jamie Carragher believes the Spaniards were too emotional on the night.
“I don’t think it’s about whether it was a knockout or a group stage. I think it’s about actually… you need to calm everybody down.
“Busquets, Pique – two of the greatest players we’ve ever seen for Barcelona and of this generation – they need to settle everybody down they didn’t need it to become an end to end game. What they needed to do for the next 10 or 15 minutes was not (try and) score, [it] was to make sure Inter Milan didn’t score.
“And then eventually, push Inter Milan back and keep sustaining attacks and think we need one goal. I put [myself] in that position if I was playing for Liverpool, at Anfield. If you needed one goal with half an hour to go, you’d back yourselves to get the one goal. Make sure you don’t concede and the game became too open, too spread, and it became too emotional.”
