Southampto fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat to Manchester United.

Chelsea start in sixth place in the league standings while Southampton dropped down to 13th place.

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhüttl thought his side deserved more against the Red Devils.

“This is also part of this beautiful game,” Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhüttl confessed. “That you sometimes do a lot of good things, do a lot of good work on the pitch but still don’t get the result.

“This is nothing that should let us worry because we have shown that we are competitive today. It was in the end some margins that we’re missing for scoring goals and in the end one protection from the opponent decided this game. This can happen in football and especially against top teams, this happens.”

“I think we played good against the ball; we didn’t give them a lot of chances. We had been compact, we had some good moments with the ball, we created some good moments in the first half, some good chances in the second half.

“You always feel on the set pieces we were dangerous today but dangerous alone is not enough. Next time we need to take this one goal, which is what we need.”

When the two teams squared off in the Premier League last season, Chelsea did the double over Southampton after they secured a comfortable 3-1 win at Stamford Bridge before thrashing the Saints 6-0 in the return leg.

Hasenhüttl has no fresh injury concerns and will be expected to keep the same squad that suffered a defeat to Manchester United over the weekend.

Thomas Tuchel will be boosted by the return of Kalidou Koulibaly from suspension but they will be without the services of Conor Gallagher, who will serve his one-match ban for two yellow cards against the Foxes.

Che Adams has slowly begun to find his form for Southampton after scoring his first two goals of the campaign in their win over Leicester City, while three of his last four goals for the Saints came after half-time, with two previous strikes coming against Chelsea.

Kai Havertz’s best performance for Chelsea came at St Mary’s Stadium after he scored four goals in their 6-0 hammering of Southampton last season.
