Betting preview: West Ham vs Manchester City

Manchester City will begin their title defence when they travel to the London Stadium to take on West Ham United on Sunday in their first Premier League fixture of the 2022-23 season.

The Citizens managed to secure their fourth league title in five years after they edged out Aston Villa 3-2 on the final day of the season to beat Liverpool to the title by a single point.

Manchester City comes into the game having won both of their respective pre-season fixtures against Club America and Bayern Munich before last Saturday’s Community Shield defeat to Liverpool.

The Hammers had a successful campaign last term after they finished in seventh place in the league standings, despite suffering a 3-1 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion on the final day of the season at the AMEX Stadium.

West Ham United won and lost one game while drawing thee out of five of their summer friendlies, securing a win against Ipswich Town, draws against Reading, Luton Town and Lens while suffering one defeat against Scottish giants, Rangers.

“We’ve got a lot to work on as far as our football goes but can’t complain with how we looked (fitness-wise) today…,” West Ham coach David Moyes said.

“We need everybody to start stepping up and show what they’re doing because you start to run out of games and you run out of time.

“We want to keep moving it along.”

“There is no reason not to be confident – no reason,” City boss Pep Guardiola said.

“What these guys have done, not just in the Premier League, but in the cups and the steps we have made in Europe and in many things.

“I don’t know what will happen at the end of the season or during the season. I don’t know.

“But I am pretty sure I know these guys and I would never, ever doubt for one second about that.

“We lost a final, we would prefer to win. We have a lot of respect and credit for the opponent.

“We know what the standard is and we will reach the standards as quickly as possible and maintain what we have done always.”

When the two teams squared off last season in the Premier League, Manchester City walked away with four points over the two-legged fixture after ending West Ham 2-1 in the first leg at the Etihad Stadium before settling for a thrilling 2-2 draw at London Stadium in the return leg.

David Moyes will be without new signing Nayef Aguerd after the player injured his ankle in pre-season, while Issa Diop has a knock and missed the game against Luton, however, Moeys will be boosted by having new signing Gianluca Scamacca available to make his debut.

Pep Guardiola will start new signing Erling Haaland upfront for his league debut while Ruben Dias and Nathan Ake are expected to be the centre-half pairing, with Aymeric Laporte injured and John Stones not fully match fit, while another new signing Julian Alvarez will definitely play a part from the bench.

Although new signing Gianluca Scamacca was not part of West Ham’s pre-season, the Italian striker will be relishing the chance to get off the mark against the defending champions after scoring 16 goals in 38 appearances across all competitions for US Sassuolo last term.

Erling Haaland will be looking to redeem himself after missing numerous chances against Liverpool in the Community Shield last weekend as he looks to become the seventh Norwegian to score on his Premier League debut if he can find the back of the net against the Hammers.
