Manchester United have agreed on a deal in principle to sign Denmark playmaker Christian Eriksen on a free transfer, according to reports.
It has been reported that United manager Erik ten Hag is set to finalise a three-year contract for Eriksen following an impressive comeback season with Brentford during the 2021-22 season.
The 30-year-old has reportedly made a verbal agreement with United and will officially complete his move to Old Trafford subject to successfully completing a medical.
Eriksen’s impending move to United completes an incredible return to football after his brush with death last year when he had a cardiac arrest on the pitch in Copenhagen while playing for Denmark at the European Championship and was forced to leave Inter Milan after recovering due to Serie A health regulations.
The Dane was then fitted with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator and proved his form and fitness during his six month loan spell at Brentford for the second half of last season, where he scored one goal and registered four assists in 11 appearances.
Eriksen worked with Ten Hag when he trained with Ajax as part of his return to football following his cardiac arrest while playing for Denmark at Euro 2020 and was attracted by the prospect of working under Ten Hag and being part of United’s new era under the Dutchman.
Ten Hag, who took over the helm from Ralf Rangnick after leaving Ajax during the off season, is now looking to rebuild his team and turn their fortunes around after they finished a disappointing sixth in the Premier League last season and missed out on a Champions League place for the season ahead.
