Orlando Pirates new coach José Riveiro

Orlando Pirates have announced the appointment of José Riveiro to the position of head coach on a three-year deal.

The newly appointed coach will be assisted by trusted aid Sergio Almenara and Mandla Ncikazi. Another ally of the Spaniard, Miguel Bellver Esteve, will work as the fitness trainer and Tyron Damons takes over as the club’s goalkeeper coach.

Riveiro insists he is ready for the job.

“First of all, I would like to send a greeting to all the fans of Orlando Pirates. I am delighted to have joined the club. The Pirates project is an exciting one and I look forward to what lies ahead. It is an honour for me and my colleagues to have the responsibility to coach such an institution and compete for the highest goals,” he says.

Riveiro has been out of work since leaving FC Inter Turku where he led the Black and Blues from 2019 to 2021. It was his first role as head coach.

He started coaching at an early age in the regional leagues in his home town of Vigo from 2010. He rose up the ranks and in 2014 he moved to Finland to join FC Honka as an assistant.

From there, Riveiro moved on to Finnish side PK-35, also as an assistant coach the following year. In 2016 Riveiro joined HJK Helsinki.

The club labelled their new mentor as “a modern, progressive coach with exciting, attacking football as his philosophy”.

The Spaniard has not won a trophy.
