BETTING PREVIEW: FA CUP ACTION

Manchester United have an opportunity to ease mounting pressure as they get set for an all-important FA Cup clash against Aston Villa on Monday.

The “honeymoon period” for interim manager Ralf Rangnick undoubtedly came to an end after the recent meek defeat to Wolves in the Premier League, which represented a fourth league defeat in 10 games at Old Trafford this season.

As the Red Devils return to their home turf for FA Cup action, Rangnick will view this as a must-win match in order to restore some faith that a rebuilding phase is heading in the right direction for United.

Regular captain Harry Maguire is in line for a return from injury, and although he has come under constant criticism this season, it would allow Rangnick the option of playing a back-three, which he trialled in the second half against Wolves for greater control.

BET ON LEICESTER vs WATFORD

It comes at a time when Eric Bailly has headed off to the Africa Cup of Nations with the Ivory Coast, and he will not be available until February, but Victor Lindelof could be available after a period of Covid-19 enforced isolation.

Aston Villa notably claimed victory at Old Trafford back in September under previous boss Dean Smith, but this is really an opportunity for United to achieve redemption in more ways than one.

The United-Aston Villa encounter will be preceded by a host of FA Cup fixtures, including a clash between Liverpool and Shrewsbury Town.

BET ON HULL vs EVERTON

This will be the second time in three seasons that Liverpool will play against unheralded Shrewsbury Town in the FA Cup, and of course the Reds will be firm favourites despite being without Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Naby Keita due to Afcon duties.

As the match approaches, though, Liverpool have formally requested a postponement of their Carabao Cup semi-final at Arsenal after a continued Covid-19 outbreak in the squad, with Sunday’s 2-2 draw at Chelsea taking place without manager Jurgen Klopp and three players: Alisson Becker, Roberto Firmino and Joel Matip.

In total, Liverpool were without nine players for the match at Chelsea through illness and injury, and the latest postponement request from Reds has also raised a question over Sunday’s FA Cup third-round tie at home to Shrewsbury.

Also on Sunday afternoon should there be no further disruptions, West Ham – who are fifth on the Premier League table – will take on Leeds at London Stadium.

Both teams are coming off good wins in the league, with West Ham manager David Moyes commending his charges for a return to prolific goal-scoring form.

“We’re back to scoring goals, but we need to be better at the other end too,” Moyes said. “I want to build a team who scores goals, I really do. I want to attack …

“We had a period coming out of the last international break where we struggled a bit up front, and we went a couple of away games without scoring, so it’s been good to score three and four in the last two games.

“Overall we need to make sure we defend better too.”
