Teko Modise has stepped into the hot seat and shared his thoughts on the quarter-final fixtures of this weekend’s MTN8 competition.
Saturday, 15:00 – Golden Arrows vs SuperSport United
What Teko says: “Golden Arrows have made a few changes, especially with a new coach, and sometimes that kind of shift can be more disruptive than productive. But, Arrows probably don’t have high ambitions for this competition which could make them dangerous.
“SuperSport, on the other hand, will be looking to go all the way in the MTN8. They are a side that often does well in cups and will start the new campaign with continuity in the dugout and on the field. SuperSport have a strong side and I think they will be one of the four sides left in the competition after this weekend.”
Saturday, 18:00 – Orlando Pirates vs Swallows
What Teko says: “Swallows are certainly a side that continues to cause the ‘bigger teams’ some headaches. They were solid last season and have added some experience to their squad as they look forward expectantly to the new season.
“Pirates have struggled for consistency … they are the defending champions which will help them prepare psychologically for this tough last eighth matchup. They need to go on a run and win games in a row which is something they have not been able to do. I feel like they are missing a striker who can help them out of trouble and win more games when things are tight. It would be nice to see Pirates going through.”
Sunday, 15:00 – Mamelodi Sundowns vs Kaizer Chiefs
What Teko says: “I think a lot of people were excited with what they saw when Chiefs beat Pirates. You know, the start of the new Kaizer Chiefs. What matters more is that Chiefs do the business in official tournaments etc. Their first test is now in a major cup especially playing Sundowns.
“Sundowns have, for the first time in a long time, had a proper pre-season which will help them a lot. Not a lot has changed in terms of their squad which is another key factor. Sundowns have so many options, not just in the starting lineup but also off the bench. Chiefs will no doubt try to start this match with a high intensity and tempo but Sundowns have been there before and know how to handle these kinds of things.”
Sunday, 18:00 – AmaZulu vs Cape Town City
What Teko says: “This is a game that is quickly turning into quite a fierce rivalry. Obviously with Benni going from Cape Town City to Amazulu. He’s done well and again, they have had a good transfer window too. They’ve spent well and had a good pre-season and all the chat from their camp sounds like they are building up to a big push this season.
“Cape Town City won’t be pushovers for sure. Sure, like Pirates, they’ve been a little inconsistent over the past two seasons or so. They are the underdogs as it stands but that actually might suit them. It’s going to be a fiery match for sure.”
