The General Teko Modise is back casting his expert eye over the Afcon Qualifier on Thursday involving South Africa and Ghana.
Teko Modise on Bafana Bafana vs Ghana
“It’s a very important game. Bafana knows what’s at stake and that they cannot afford to lose a game in their remaining fixtures. They have two tough games with a trip to face Sudan on Sunday at the Al-Hilal Stadium in Matchday 6 of the Africa Cup of Nations qualification.
Facing Sudan so soon after the Ghana match on Thursday means that South Africa will be aware of the need to pick up all three points at home.
The key members of the Ghana team are not part of the travelling squad that is in South Africa – read more in our South Africa vs Ghana preview here – with the UK having red flagged travel to South Africa due to Covid regulations. The Ayew brothers are not coming and Thomas Partey is also not in the squad to face Bafana Bafana.
We know how good Thomas Partey is having seen him play for Arsenal in the Premier League. Losing their key players will definitely be an advantage for Bafana Bafana.
With the players that we have in the squad we are definitely capable of winning this game and qualifying for Afcon. The inclusion of Percy Tau is important and a real morale for the squad knowing how talented and influential Percy is.
For me the biggest issue for Bafana Bafana is the absence of Bongani Zungu with the Rangers midfielder a late withdrawal from the squad. We will miss his presence in midfield in the game against Ghana. His experience and stature as a player for Glasgow Rangers will be a big loss to our midfield.
Hopefully Percy will stay fit and be able to provide the goals that we will need to win these key matches. Yes, there are in-form players that have been called into the national team in Vincent Pule and Thabiso Kutumela and it’s great to see coach Molefi Ntseki giving those players the opportunity and rewarding their form.
We’ll have to wait and see what system Bafana Bafana will opt for, but that will also be determined by the players that are selected. I think it’s important for us to play the players selected in their rightful positions to allow them to give their best performances. In the past we’ve played players out of position at national level and wonder why the players don’t produce their domestic form. If we can have an identity in terms of the philosophy and the systems that we play, that will allow us to it will be easier for the players to adapt and win games.
It’s important for them to adapt quickly because the Ghana team they face – even without some of their key players – is still a quality team with players from the top leagues around the world. They will come in with a strong squad and we’ll need a characteristically strong game against Ghana. They are a physically strong team and we’ll need to use our speed and get the ball in good positions to Percy Tau to create opportunities.
The players, the fans and the country know how big the Afcon tournament is and the players want to be on the big stage. They will be going all out to qualify for the final.
If we can settle down quickly and play our best I can see Bafana Bafana beating Ghana.
