Cape Town City welcome Stellenbosch FC to the Cape Town Stadium looking to reignite their push for a top four place in the PSL.
A derby against CT City FC couldn’t come at a worse time for Stellenbosch, who travel from the winelands without a win in their last five games. In fact, it is a run that has seen three straight defeats to leave them in 12th place and just four off the basement.
Cape Town City are also in something of a wobble after failing in their double header with Chippa United. A defeat in the Cup was followed by a league draw which leaves coach Jan Olde Riekerink without a win in five games.
The Citizens are certainly up for the derby as they look to push reset on their league aspirations.
“It’s derby day. Everyone has been waiting for this day. The team is excited and ready and the vibe is going great. We need these points and let’s kill them!” said Craig Martin, who has been called up to the national team for the first time.
Stellies boss Steve Barker is aware of the significance of Saturday’s fixture.
“We are not happy with where we are in the league and season thus far. It is a great opportunity for us to turn things around. The mood in the camp has been really good. Our game against Sundowns was postponed so that gave us extra time to prepare for the derby, refresh the mind, refresh the body,” he said.
“We are looking forward to the derby. It is always nice to play in derby matches. All previous encounters with Cape Town City have been really tight, hard fought affairs. We have had the upper hand and they have had. It is a really important match for us. It is an opportunity for us to get our season back on track.”
