Manchester United earned a point on the road in their blockbuster clash at Anfield which left Manchester City in a good position to move top.
The Red Devils, the best team on the road this season, walked away with a point after a goalless draw against Liverpool, the best team on the road.
“In the season when we came second (2018/19), the day when I started really thinking about the title race was the day when it was clear that we are in the Champions League,” said Jurgen Klopp.
“I know my job and I know what I have to do. The most important thing is to qualify for the Champions League and I know how difficult it is. This season will be a tough race for the top four.”
The draw dropped Liverpool to fourth behind United, City and Leicester City.
United’s boss, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, was upbeat despite his side’s wealth of attacking options failing to break the deadlock.
“We can be more composed, we can have the ball more, we had to defend really often and I thought we gave the ball away too often,” he said.
“Maybe some moments we missed, when Marcus makes his runs in behind – maybe sometimes we don’t pass it every time he runs and sometimes we missed it when he should have had it. So a couple of things that we need to improve on.”
John Stones scored twice as City beat Crystal Palace 4-0, it was their fifth win in a row.
The England defender has been key in the turnaround and while he was a goalscorer this weekend, his manager singled him out for his defensive efforts alongside Ruben Dias.
“Confidence is everything,” Pep Guardiola said. “He won his confidence for himself. As managers, we can’t give confidence. He started to play alongside Ruben and they’ve played really well.”
