PSL - Chippa United v Stellenbosch

Friday night’s lone fixture presents Chippa United the golden opportunity to all but guarantee their place in the PSL next season.

The Chilli Boys will start with fresh vigour after their 1-0 victory over Baroka FC. The win moved them to 30 points. In 12th place ahead of kick off, a victory would all but be enough to put the required distance between themselves and last-placed Polokwane City, who have 24 points.

Chippa coach Lehlohonolo Seema will be hoping the five-day break, a long time in these strange times, will be enough to thwart their visitors.

“Look, all of the teams need extra days [off] because these guys work very hard,” Seema said.

“During this time we will work towards rejuvenating the players because they will have to fight for points again against Stellenbosch. It won’t be an easy match but at least we have five days to work on our game plan before then, so it will make a difference.”

Stellenbosch have proven themselves in their first campaign in the topflight and after the restart have picked up seven points including a draw against leaders Kaizer Chiefs.

They start this encounter with an eye on the MTN8. The Winelands franchise are level with current eighth-placed side Highlands Park but have a weaker goal difference. In fact, they are only two points behind in-form Cape Town City, who occupy seventh place.

Surviving relegation in yet another tumultuous Chippa United season will bring their fans much joy. Although, those fans will still be digesting the news that the club will be based out of East London next season and potentially permanently beyond that.

Their current home – the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium – has been used as a quarantine site since May.

“The club had to submit ABSA Stadium in East London as their main home venue and Sisa Dukashe Stadium as alternative venue for the start of the 2020/21. The club is also currently engaging with all revelant stakeholders to make the move permanent,” wrote the club in confirming the speculation.

Kick off at the Tuks Stadium is set for 6pm.
