Samir Nurkovic’s goals are firing Kaizer Chiefs ever closer to their first league title since 2015 and there’s no reason to suggest either the club or player will be slowing down.
2020 has been an unpredictable year to say the least … while many had pencilled in Gabadinho Mhango as the outstanding winner of the Lesley Manyathela Golden Boot award, the script was torn up by the coronavirus pandemic.
Mhango has not scored since February … and while his goals have dried up, the goals have been flowing for crosstown rival Nurkovic.
The Serbian arrived at the start of the campaign as one in a long line of attackers looking to ease the load on Khama Billiat. Not only has he done that but in 21 league games, he has proven himself to be of the highest quality; comfortable with the ball at his feet as he is attacking cross and corners.
Wednesday’s clash against Celtic offers Amakhosi the chance to extend their six-point lead over Sundowns. The potential joy is two-fold as Nurkovic now firmly has Mhango’s grip on the Golden Boot award in his sights as he starts just one goal behind. The Player of the Year award is another personal accolade ready to be added to his collection.
In PSL round one, the Chiefs frontman bagged a hat-trick against Siwelele and coach Ernst Middendorp would gleefully take a repeat performance. It would be hard to bet against Nurkovic not levelling matters with Mhango and in the process taking Chiefs to the brink of glory.
The trophy drought at Naturena has been well-documented as has the problem with the lack of goals from their front men. Many have come and gone over the years in the search for an out and out goalscorer. The last time their top scorer moved into double figures was during the 2013-14 when Bernard Parker hit that number.
Now, the club have a man who’s already ended a streak that left a bitter taste amongst its loyal fans. Victory over Celtic will no doubt have everyone connected to the club just about ready to pour their cups and toast to the sweet taste of success once again.
Suggested bet: Samir Nurkovic to score anytime and Chiefs to win at 2.34 (Jengabet)
