In the first leg, Man City ran riot over Sporting after they thrashed the Portuguese side 5-0 at the Estadio Jose Alvalade through a brace from Bernardo Silva and goals from Riyad Mahrez, Phil Foden and Raheem Sterling before they played out to a goalless draw at the Etihad Stadium in the return leg.

The Spanish giants progressed to this round of the competition after they eliminated Manchester United 2-1 on aggregate win over the two fixtures.

The first leg saw Atelti and Man Utd play out to a 1-1 draw at the Wanda Metropolitano after a late goal from Anthony Elanga cancelled out João Félix’s seventh-minute opener before the La Liga champions edged United 1-0 in the return leg at Old Trafford with Renan Lodi scoring the decisive goal to send his side into the next round.

Man City coach Pep Guardiola says: “People say experience when you are old but it works when you get good lessons and you learn from them.

“Being here is because we work a lot and we have done that every single season. That is a lot of credit for the whole organisation.

“We will fight. The opponent is so tough and good but they said we will make a proper battle and we accept that.”

The two-legged fixture at the Etihad Stadium and the Wanda Metropolitano in the quarter-finals will be the first two meetings between Man City and Atletico.

Pep Guardiola will be without the services of Kyle Walker, who is serving a three-match suspension, while Ruben Dias is sidelined with a hamstring injury and youngster Cole Palmer with an ankle injury.

Kevin De Bruyne will be looking to build on his recent form for City across all competitions, which has seen him score three goals in his last three appearances following his brace against Manchester United and his solitary goal against Burnley over the weekend.
